RKA’s Richmond Office Happenings & Highlights

RKA’s Richmond office is booming! We are working on a wide variety of Public and Private projects in every corner of Virginia from traffic impact analysis (TIA) reports and traffic signal designs to parking demand studies and helping clients with due diligence/site selection studies. We are excited to have an intern from the University of Virginia with us this summer, and we are actively seeking transportation engineers and planners to join our growing team. Let’s take a look at our Richmond office member spotlight and a few highlights from the past year.

Regional Manager
Q: What do you enjoy about transportation engineering?
A: The constant challenge of getting people from point A to point B safely and efficiently.  Although this is a technical field with a lot of science behind it, there is also an art to transportation engineering. I tell clients that all the easy sites have already been developed, so every project now requires creativity to work out a solution that works for our clients, the review agencies, and the public.
Q: What do you like most about working at RKA?
A: I would say the strength of our firm is our team-first attitude. We have some really outstanding people, and many of us have been with the firm for a long time. RKA is an employee-owned company, which is a huge separator; it gives everyone a piece of ownership, and it drives everyone to make every project a success.
Q: What are your biggest achievements to date?
A: First, I am super proud of my daughters who are 17 and 19 years old. They are AMAZING young ladies, and I am lucky to be their dad. In my career, I would say earning two Masters degrees, and passing the P.E. and PTOE exams.
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: I really enjoy staying active. I love running 5ks, 10ks, hiking in the mountains, watching football and lacrosse, and long walks on the beach. In fact, I recently ran the Virginia War Memorial 5k (pictured above).
Q: Where would you like to travel if you could go anywhere in the world?
A: So far, I have been to 30 states and will be checking off two more this summer – Massachusetts and Rhode Island! I have been to Yellowstone and Paris; both were incredible. My bucket list includes Hawaii, Australia, England, and Italy.
RKA performed a parking demand study for the Winchester Medical Center in downtown Winchester, VA. The 159,000 square foot facility is served by five surface lots and on-street parking along the adjacent neighborhood streets. The existing parking supply is plentiful because the facility is only 60% occupied.  However, a memory care unit is moving in to occupy 53,000 square feet of space, and two of the surface lots are expected to be redeveloped with residential units, which will decrease the parking supply. RKA performed parking occupancy counts over two consecutive days to determine the current peak parking demand, then calculated the future parking demand required by the memory care unit. Our study determined that the three remaining surface lots will be approximately 90% occupied, which is an ideal occupancy for parking facilities. This means that during peak times, the surface lots and on-street parking will be nearly full, but there should be some spaces available for patients, employees, and visitors.
Last month, RKA attended the UVA Job & Internship Career Fair. We are excited to welcome Wes Suitt, a UVA student, to RKA. He will be interning with us this summer.
