CHARLOTTE, NC – August 2018 – RKA is pleased to announce the addition of Michael Bywaletz, P.E., CPESC, as the firm’s Charlotte Region Leader.
Mr. Bywaletz is a graduate of the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He is an accomplished Professional Engineer with 33 years of diverse experience in all facets of transportation and hydrological design. He has worked on a broad range of projects related to roadway and drainage design, flood plain analysis, and erosion control for multiple State DOT’s, counties, municipalities, and private clients. Additionally, he offers exceptional knowledge in green infrastructure and natural system solutions.
Mr. Bywaletz’s primary role with RKA includes expanding RKA’s roadway design, transportation engineering, transportation planning, and traffic operations in the Charlotte region, as well as firm wide.
On the addition of Mr. Bywaletz to RKA, Mr. Stephen Greene, P.E., Executive Vice President/COO stated, “We are very excited to have Michael join our firm. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to RKA and we look forward to having Michael grow our firm’s presence in the Charlotte region.”
On a more personal note, we asked Mr. Bywaletz to answer a few questions related to the engineering industry.
What do you hope to accomplish in the next five years?
I would like to see the Charlotte office triple in size with strategic growth in roadway and drainage design as well as planning.  Having a more focused approach will assist us with gaining more public sector clients and expanding our role with NCDOT in the region.  With personnel growth come office space needs and this would require new office space in the University area to accommodate current and future growth of staff. With this anticipated increase in transportation staff I would expect net revenue growth to also triple.
What advice would you give to someone looking into the engineering industry?
Get out there and co-op or intern at engineering/surveying firms as early as you can so you can figure out which direction you want to take as you start to specialize in your Junior and Senior years.  I worked for two surveying companies starting in high school through graduating from college.  Not only does it pay the bills but shows initiative to future employers that you are wanting to go the extra mile.
How do you keep a healthy work/life balance?
My work/life balance has always revolved around my family.  I try to get them involved in what I am doing with work and was always entrenched in their activities.  While my children were growing up (both are in college now) I coached them in soccer and also achieved getting my National “C” Coaching license.  I was a Boy Scout leader and still am, I play soccer, I’m a DIYer, and love to go on cruises with my wife to the Caribbean, shooting for Alaska soon.  I’ve taken my wife and family to the ASHE National Conferences as they become mini-vacations also.
